An update from the EM4CO2 project on the use on
EM technology for CO2 monitoring

Description

Resistivity is known to be sensitive to fluid (i.e. CO2) saturation changes in a formation, and can be mapped directly by inverting electromagnetic data.

Therefore, the so-called controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) technique can be considered as a promising geophysical monitoring tool. In this talk, we present a synthetic-model-based study to explore and evaluate the full capability of CSEM for CO2 storage monitoring in the North Sea setting. For this purpose, we categorize the North Sea storage candidates according to the reservoir depth and look at the CSEM data sensitivity for each depth candidate. To generalize the study, we consider multi-component transmitters and receivers. The study is done as part of the EM4CO2 project supported by the Research Council of Norway (CLIMIT-KPN) and NCCS.

Fiscal Metering for CCS: knowns and unknowns

Building on various years of research within NCCS, the seminar examines the challenges that fiscal metering for CCS faces.

The work discusses the foundation and regulatory framework for fiscal metering of CO2, and provides an overview of the most promising technologies from a benchmarking study. The challenges and unknowns for measuring CO2, including traceability to a flow reference are also discussed.

Decompression of CO2 pipelines through restrictions

We will present experimental data acquired in the ECCSEL Depressurization Facility along with analysis.

A tube filled with dense-phase CO2 has been depressurized through the opening of a rupture disc. The tube opening was not full-bore, but restricted through the use of orifices and nozzles of different sizes. The results can guide, among other things the calculation of flow rates. In particular, we show that it is necessary to account for partial flashing.
