CEMCAP-topp-nyhetsbrev
Dear CEMCAP newsletter readers,
The CEMCAP project has come to an end after 42 months. The project started in May 2015 and the consortium has over the project duration collaborated towards the common objective of preparing the ground for large-scale implementation of CO2 capture in the European cement industry. And we believe we have succeded! Now at the end of the project we have advanced five different CO2 capture technologies that are ready for or already progressing towards demonstration. The technologies are oxyfuel, Chilled Ammonia Process (CAP), Membrane-assisted liquefaction (MAL), Tail-end calcium looping and entrained flow calcium looping.

The IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5ºC was published on October 8, 2018. This report underlines the importance of significant CO2 emissions reductions from industry to reach the 1.5OCtarget. In this context it is important to note that the cement industry contributes with 6-7% of manmade CO2 emissions. CEMCAP has increased knowledge, undertaken pilot-scale testing and contributed to advancing CO2 capture for this industrial sector and also highlighted the knowledge gaps that need to be filled. Results are available and ready for in-house, case specific evaluations of CO2 capture from the cement industry. Please use them so that we can continue to progress towards CO2 capture demonstration and implementation in the cement industry!

CEMCAP-Project: Tech options for cement CO2-capture need a plant specific assessment

The Horizon2020 project CEMCAP on CO2 capture from the cement industry is coming to an end. In CEMCAP, five CO2 capture technologies from cement have been investigated. As observed by Mari Voldsund in her talk on techno-economic comparison of the technologies and as concluded by Rob van der Meer of HeidelbergCement … Read more

The final stretch of CEMCAP – 7 presentations and 5 posters at the 14th Greenhouse Gas Technologies Conference, Melbourne, Australia

CEMCAP is a project funded by Horizon 2020 addressing CO2 capture from cement production. The primary objective of CEMCAP is to prepare the ground for large-scale implementation of CO2 capture in the European cement industry. The project has been running for 3,5 years, and will be concluded the 31st of October. …Read more

The heritage after CEMCAP: Deliverables

All public deliverables from CEMCAP are uploaded to the CEMCAP website as soon as they have been delivered to the EU. Once the deliveravbles are approved by the EU, they are also uploaded to the CEMCAP community in the Zenodo repository. Here you can also find the spreadsheet that was developed for the cost calculations in the techno-economic comparison (D4.6). At the time of distributing this newsletter this important deliverable is not yet available on the website, but it will be within very few days. You should also keep an eye on the website for the final CEMCAP strategic conclusions report (D2.11) that will be published later in November.

The heritage after CEMCAP: Webinars and recorded presentations
On October 29, two final webinars were arranged in CEMCAP, with the possibility for the attendants to ask questions.

These are now available on the CEMCAP website and on youtube.

Webinar 1
  • Progress made in the CEMCAP project by Kristin Jordal, SINTEF
  • Technology demo for cement industry oxyfuel capture retrofit by Johannes Ruppert, VDZ
  • Retrofitability of CO2 capture technologies to cement plants by Mari Voldsund, SINTEF
Webinar 2
  • Techno-economic analysis of Calcium Looping processes for low CO2 emission cement plants by Matteo Romano, Politecnico di Milano
  • Techno-economic evaluation of five technologies for CO2 capture from cement production by Stefania Gardardsottir, SINTEF, including a presentation of the publicly available spreadsheet for cost evaluations.
We have also recorded presentations by CEMCAP researchers that are now available.
The following presentations were recorded
  • Oxyfuel modelling – WP6 - Armin Jamali, VDZ
  • Oxyfuel clinker cooler prototype: operation and clinker analysis - WP9 - Marco Lino, VDZ
  • Simulation, modelling and optimization of different chilled ammonia-based process configurations for CO2 capture applied to cement plants - WP10 - José-Francisco Pérez-Calvo, ETH Zürich
  • Membrane and membrane assisted liquefaction processes for CO2 capture from cement plants - WP11 - Rahul Anatharaman, SINTEF
With this we conclude the final CEMCAP newsletter. We will still be active on twitter for a while, e.g. for announcing when deliverables are published on our website www.sintef.no/cemcap and uploaded to the CEMCAP community in Zenodo. So please continue to follow us on @cemcap_co2!

Thank you so much for following us!
